Howie Day, the opening act for tomorrow's Spring Benefit Concert, cancelled at the last minute due to a death in his immediate family.

"We found out around 1:30 p.m. today and obviously we feel a lot worse for him than for us," said Margaret Nuzzolese, executive director of programming for the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) and A&S'06.

Virginia Coalition, which opened last year's Fall Concert is slated to replace Day as the opening act for tomorrow's concert, All proceeds will go to the Franciscan Children's Hospital.

Nuzzolese said the procedure for finding a replacement on such short notice was aided by Clear Channel, the agency UGBC uses to book acts.

"Clear Channel worked so hard with us because with a new band it's hard to turn everything around with one day left. There has to be allowances made for new sound set ups, new stage, and other things," said Nuzzolese. "The ODSD [Office of the Dean for Student Development] administration has been very helpful, and [Dean Christopher] Darcy has been very helpful in helping us with this."

Regardless of the last minute switch, Nuzzolese remained optimistic about the concert.

"We understand people will be upset that Howie Day will not be coming, but it's not a fake excuse; it's a legitimate tragedy," she said. "We are still really excited about the concert and not bummed about it at all because Virginia Coalition did really well last year and has a big following."

Currently, approximately 2,000 tickets out of about 4,000 tickets have been sold. Tickets will be available all day at the McElroy ticket office for $15 each with a valid BC ID and also at the door at Conte Forum before the concert. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Any students who want reimbursements for tickets due to Day's cancellation should look to UGBC.org for further information.
